OnePlus has released a patch to fix the infamous Stagefright bug in the Android operating system. The fix is only for the versions of the One smartphone that run on its own Oxygen OS. It is unclear whether the patch will completely solve the problem.

The patch has been made public by OnePlus on its forum, with the manufacturer advising its users to install the software manually. An over-the-air update does not seem to be forthcoming: the OnePlus One smartphone was released from the factory with CyanogenMod and the Oxygen OS ROM is not certified. It is likely that the upcoming OnePlus 2, which was recently announced and runs on Oxygen OS as standard, is already provided with the release of the patch.

It is unclear whether the patch released by OnePlus offers full protection against the Stagefright bug. The Chinese manufacturer does not provide details on how it resolved the vulnerability. Earlier it appeared that a patch released by Google does not provide sufficient protection against the Stagefright bug. A security company discovered that the vulnerability can still be exploited. Google has already sent a second patch to its hardware partners, but it is unclear whether OnePlus has been able to use it yet.

For OnePlus One users running CyanogenMod, there is the option to fix the Stagefright bug by installing a nightly; version 12.1 of the software should fix the problem. It is unclear whether OnePlus will release an over-the-air update as soon as there is a final version, but this is plausible.
