OnePlus has announced that it will update its 5T device so that it can display full-HD video streams from services such as Netflix and Amazon. This is currently not possible, because support for the correct DRM is lacking.

A spokesperson for the Chinese smartphone maker told The Verge that an update for the OnePlus 5T is coming, but did not mention a target date. As a result, it remains unclear when the update will be released. The Verge asked the company questions after the site learned through a forum thread that OnePlus’ latest device cannot play full-HD content from services such as Netflix, Amazon and Google Play.

This is because the company’s devices only have support for Level 3 drm from the Google company Widevine. However, Level 1 support is required to display videos in full HD resolution. It is not possible to conclude from the wording of OnePlus whether the update will also be released for other devices from the manufacturer. The Verge writes that the OnePlus 5 does not support full-HD content either. The company gave no reason for the lack of Widevine Level 1.

The OnePlus 5T has a screen with a resolution of 2160×1080 pixels, so it is able to display full-HD videos. The device came out at the end of November with a starting price of 499 euros.
