OnePlus is going to add an option to disable throttling in OxygenOS 12
The Android 12 upgrade for OnePlus smartphones will have a toggle that can disable throttling on certain phones. It also seems that the OnePlus 9R and Nord 2 smartphones will also receive some form of throttling.
According to OnePlus, users will be given the option to enable and disable the ‘optimized mode’, as OnePlus calls the throttling. That’s what the company says against Android Police. Details about what this option will look like and where it will be located are not yet given. The company wants to give users more control over the performance of their phones with the option.
The option will appear with “one of the first builds” of Oxygen OS 12. When this version of Android 12 will appear, it is not known. After August, Google is expected to be ready with Android 12.
OnePlus goes on to say that the company has applied “optimizations in various ways” to the OnePlus 9R and Nord 2. In the next sentence, it talks about being able to enable and disable “this” optimized mode. That wording makes it look like the 9R and Nord 2 models will also get some form of throttling.
At the beginning of July, OnePlus confirmed to be throttling the performance of some apps on the OnePlus 9 and 9 Pro smartphones. The manufacturer says it wants to optimize the battery life and heat of the phones. Users would not notice this, the company claims. These include WhatsApp, Facebook, YouTube and Office that are being throttled by the manufacturer. When throttling, not all processor cores are used in order to reduce performance.
