The Chinese start-up OnePlus has sold about one and a half million units of its One smartphone in just over a year. Although it lags behind the major smartphone manufacturers, the objectives have been amply achieved, according to OnePlus.

Carl Pei, one of the founders of OnePlus, gave information about the sales figures in an interview with The Wall Street Journal, which released a video of it. The company has sold approximately one million units since November. The speed at which OnePlus sells smartphones therefore seems to have increased compared to the first half, which is probably due to the fact that an invitation is no longer necessary to buy the device.

According to Pei, the number of sales is significantly higher than what the company had in mind. 30,000 units had to be sold in a year to keep the business going, while a sales figure of 50,000 would mean “a good year”. In its own words, OnePlus does not need large sales numbers, because it sells its smartphones itself and uses low margins. In terms of sales, the Chinese start-up does not compete with the major smartphone manufacturers, which sell tens of millions of units per year.

In the interview, Pei also spoke briefly about the OnePlus 2, the successor to the One that will be announced next week. It would have taken more than a year to develop the smartphone, according to the CEO. Earlier, OnePlus already announced that the device will receive a Snapdragon 810-soc with 4GB of ram, and that a USB-C port is built-in.
