OnePlus tells CNet that the feature will be called Screen Unlock and that it will allow you to put a finger on the phone’s screen and unlock it. OnePlus is not the first manufacturer to use this technology. Sister company Vivo was the first to sell a phone with a fingerprint scanner behind the screen. Oppo also offers the function in the R17 and R17 Pro, among others. The past OnePlus phones were derivatives of Oppo R-series phones.
Earlier, a package of the OnePlus 6T had surfaced that hinted at the presence of an ‘in screen’ fingerprint scanner. The three companies Oppo, OnePlus and Vivo, are all part of parent company BBK and they do component procurement together, among other things.
The message contains a hint that the phone will be released on October 17. The site shows a screenshot from OnePlus of the locking screen of the OnePlus 6T, which includes the date October 17th. The screen ratio of the screenshot differs from the OnePlus 6. The ratio corresponds to the R17 phones, which have a 6.4 “OLED screen with 2340 x 1080 pixels.
The Chinese company further tells the site that it had actually wanted to introduce the fingerprint scanner behind the screen in the OnePlus 5T, but that the technology did not yet work well enough. The 6T is 0.45 mm thicker than its predecessor and the introduction of the new scanner means that, according to OnePlus, there is more of a unibody look.
