OnePlus 10 Pro has much smaller ultra-wide-angle sensor than predecessor

OnePlus has revealed the full specs of its OnePlus 10 Pro. This shows that the new top model for the ultra-wide-angle camera uses a much smaller 1/2.76 “sensor than the OnePlus 9 Pro. It has a 1/1.56” sensor. However, the angle of view is much larger.

OnePlus gives the ultra-wide-angle camera of the OnePlus 10 Pro a lens with an angle of view of up to 150 degrees. That is much larger than the 123 degrees of the comparable lens of the OnePlus 9 Pro, but that comes with a concession in the form of a much smaller 1/2.76″ sensor. It concerns the Samsung Isocell JN1 sensor, with a 50-megapixel resolution and pixels of 0.64 microns. The sensor has an area of approximately 16mm².

With the OnePlus 9 Pro, the manufacturer used a large sensor for the ultra-wide-angle lens. That was the IMX766, a 50-megapixel sensor of the 1/1.56″ format, with an area of about 50 mm², which is used by many manufacturers as the sensor for the primary camera.

Due to the much smaller sensor area, it is likely that the ultra-wide-angle camera of the OnePlus 10 Pro will perform less well in low light than the OnePlus 9 Pro. Also, photos may be less detailed. The resolution of both sensors is the same, but larger sensors generally capture more detail for an equal number of pixels.

OnePlus has released some photos taken with the OnePlus 10 Pro, but it’s not clear to what extent they come straight from the camera or have been edited. Of the three photos below, the left photo was taken with the ultra-wide angle camera, the other two were taken with the primary camera.

150 or 110 degrees

By default, the OnePlus 10 Pro’s ultra-wide-angle camera is set to capture images with lens distortion corrected. This brings the angle of view to 110 degrees. This means that the angle of view is also smaller than the OnePlus 9 Pro, which takes photos with an angle of view of 123 degrees. With the OnePlus 10 Pro, however, you can opt for a fisheye mode. In it, the distortion correction is turned off and the camera takes photos with an angle of view of 150 degrees.

According to OnePlus, the new top model will receive an improved Hasselblad Pro mode. With this, the phone takes 12-bit raw photos, with all three cameras on the back. There is also a new raw+ mode, which uses computational photography. Recordings then consist of several combined images, just like jpgs, but they are 12-bit files with more room for post-processing. That is comparable to Apple’s ProRaw function.

Furthermore, OnePlus emphasizes that the OnePlus 10 Pro will have a movie function where users can adjust the ISO value, shutter speed and white balance before and during filming. There is also an option for recording in log format, without color profile. This produces faded images, with more room for post-processing. The OnePlus 10 Pro films in 4k resolution at 120, 60 or 30fps and in 8k resolution at 24fps.

Prices in China

Last week, OnePlus already announced almost all other specifications of the OnePlus 10 Pro. In China, the device will be available from January 13, for prices starting at 4699 yuan. Converted with VAT, that is about 786 euros. OnePlus says that the device will come to Europe later this year, but when is not yet known.
