Olympus working on Google Glass competitor

Olympus has announced that it is working on glasses that are comparable to Google’s Project Glass. The Meg 4.0 has a screen and can be connected via bluetooth to other devices, such as a smartphone.

The manufacturer announced the device on its Japanese website, so it is still unclear whether the release will also take place outside the home country. The glasses have a screen with a resolution of 320×240 pixels, for which Olympus claims to have built in its own optical technology that ensures that both the screen and the outside world can be seen properly.

According to Olympus, the Meg 4.0 has bluetooth, but GPS applications are also possible. Furthermore, little was said about the possible applications. The manufacturer does claim that various applications are being developed for the glasses, which also allow a connection to a smartphone. For the time being, it is a prototype, for which no release date or price has been announced.

The Meg 4.0 is similar to Google’s Glass project. The internet giant comes with similar glasses, for which developers can register. They have to pay 1500 euros for the glasses, after which they will be delivered in 2013. For Olympus, it is not the first time that they have come up with such a prototype of augmented reality glasses: in 2008 the company already showed the Mobile Eye-Trek.
