Olympus introduces the Tough TG-6, a waterproof compact camera that must be able to take a beating. The camera is almost the same as its predecessor, except for a higher resolution of the screen on the back.

The Olympus TG-6 has an LCD with a resolution of 1.04 million pixels, while the TG-5 had to make do with a screen with a resolution of 460,000 pixels. In addition, a new anti-reflective coating has been applied to the lens and an optional fisheye adapter is available.

The lens and sensor are unchanged; it still involves a 12-megapixel sensor of the 1/2.3″ format and a lens with a range of 25-100mm in full-frame equivalent with an aperture of f/2-4.9. The macro mode where focusing on an object possible at 1cm in front of the camera is preserved and the battery life of 340 photos on a single charge is also unchanged.

Shooting is still at a maximum of 20 fps and the 4k movie function still has a maximum frame rate of 30 fps. When filming, the entire sensor is used and the bit rate is 102Mbit/s. Time-lapse videos could previously only be recorded in 4k and HD resolutions, but a full HD resolution is now also available.

According to the official specifications, the TG-6 is waterproof to 15 meters, shockproof to a drop of up to 2.1 meters, and resistant to dust and frost down to temperatures of -10 degrees Celsius. These specifications are completely the same as those of the two predecessors.

The new camera will have a suggested retail price of 479 euros, which is also equal to the suggested retail price that Olympus gave the TG-5 when it came on the market in June 2017. The TG-6 is available in red and black.
