OHRA tests real-time tracking of driving behavior to determine premium level

Insurer OHRA will start a trial on 1 March in which customers pay lower premiums if they exhibit ‘good driving behaviour’. Customers who participate in the trial will receive a box in their car that transmits the driving behavior to OHRA servers.

The insurer emails customers with the question whether they want to participate in the experiment, tweet OHRA customer Joost Tadema. During the trial, which lasts three months, customers who participate will receive a device in their car that registers driving behavior and passes it on to the insurer. In an accompanying app, customers can see how well their driving behavior scores, in the form of a ‘ride score’.

In addition, customers can get a 35 percent discount on their premium during the trial, according to a list of frequently asked questions and answers published by OHRA. It is unknown whether this is also the percentage that customers can receive as a discount if OHRA decides to introduce the so-called pay how you drive concept as insurance.

It is unknown how OHRA handles the private data of customers participating in the trial. It is also unclear what information the device collects: in any case, it concerns data about braking, acceleration and cornering. When asked, OHRA was unable to indicate on Friday afternoon whether the insurer, for example, saves the location of customers, and whether this will be removed after calculating the trip score.
