OCZ again comes with a new SSD model. The 2.5″ OCZ Onyx is a budget SSD with which the manufacturer is targeting the home user market. The 32GB disk offers better performance than conventional hard disks and is relatively favorably priced.

The 2.5″ large OCZ Onyx coming currently only available in a 32GB variant and will have a suggested retail price of less than $100. This makes it a competitor for OCZ’s own Solid 2 SSDs, but also for, for example, the Kingston SSDNow V series and the Intel X25-V.

The 32 gigabytes of mlc memory are controlled by an Indilinx Amigos controller. To what extent this controller can approach the performance of the well-known Indilinx Barefoot remains to be seen; random I/O rates were not disclosed. The Onyx’s sequential read and write speeds are 125MBps and 70MBps respectively. The ssd has a buffer of 64MB and supports the trim command. OCZ specifies a 1.5 million hour MTBF and provides a three-year warranty on the new drives.
