Oculus has reached fifty percent market share on Steam when it comes to VR headsets. That’s according to the Steam Hardware Survey. The increase is mainly due to the Oculus Rift S. The market share of the original Rift fell, but more and more gamers are using the new Rift S.

The Oculus Rift S climbed to a Steam market share of 13.03 percent in September. That was 10.85 a month earlier. The original Oculus Rift lost some market share. In August, 37.8 percent of Steam users with VR glasses had a Rift CV1 and in September this was 36.4 percent. This decrease is probably due to an increase in the absolute number of VR headset owners. In September that rose to 1.09 percent, a month earlier that was 1.03 percent of Steam users.

In total, Oculus currently has a market share of 50.07 percent among Steam users. These include the Oculus Rift CV1, Oculus Rift S, and the older Rift development kits. Oculus reached this percentage twice before; before the release of the original HTC Vive in early 2016, and just before the release of the Vive Pro in 2017, after the price of the Rift was lowered to 450 euros, UploadVR writes.

The HTC Vive currently has a market share of 32.5 percent. Last month this was still 35.4 percent. Windows Mixed Reality glasses fell from 8.24 to 5.87 percent this month. The decline started around the release of the Rift S and the Valve Index, which also saw a higher user base this month at 4.98 percent from 3.32 percent in August.

The HTC Vive Cosmos will be launched next month. It is possible that this headset will take over some market share from Oculus. At 799 euros, these glasses are more expensive than the Oculus Rift S, which is available for 499 euros at the time of writing.
