Oculus stops delivery of test version VR glasses to the Chinese
Chinese can no longer order the DK2 of the Oculus Rift glasses since Thursday for an unknown time. Also, an unknown number of pre-orders from people from China have been canceled. Oculus gives the reason that the kits are resold en masse in China for more money.
Via Reddit, an Oculus employee says that the company wants copies of its second Developers Kit to actually end up with developers. The resale would reach such proportions that Oculus would have been forced to stop selling to China. However, the employee does say that not all pre-orders from Chinese people will be cancelled.
The company is currently looking for an ‘alternative sales process’ for the DK2. It is not clear what exactly is meant by this. It is also unknown if and when the kit will be available again for Chinese developers. Oculus began shipping the first 10,000 copies of its DK2 earlier this week. The company acknowledges that it is lagging behind in its production; in total, it claims to have received more than 45,000 orders for the DK2.
Google announced earlier this week that it would offer support for virtual reality glasses in its Chrome browser, after Mozilla announced it earlier. Brandon Jones, developer of WebGL at Google, expects that VR in the Chrome browser can be used to, for example, display products in 3D and run special VR web applications.
