Oculus starts shipping Rift Developer Kit 2

Oculus has started shipping the second developer kit of its Rift virtual reality goggles. In the first rounds of shipments, according to Oculus, about 10,000 glasses will be sent to people who have reserved one.

According to Oculus, the DK2 has already been ordered more than 45,000 times. The company acknowledges that it is lagging behind in production and that some of the current pre-orders may not ship until August. Although the first glasses should be on the doormat by July 14, Oculus says that all 10,000 copies should arrive by the end of this month.

The DK2 includes positioning via an external camera, which would allow the system to better determine how users move their heads. This would allow the glasses to respond more quickly to movements of the users’ head, making them less likely to feel nauseous or dizzy while using the glasses. In addition, it has an OLED display with a total resolution of 1920×1080 pixels and a refresh rate of up to 75Hz. The design of the glasses has also been adjusted. With the Oculus Rift development kits, buyers always receive the SDK with which they can develop software for the Rift glasses.

The DK2 is currently still available for pre-order through Oculus’ site for $350. Orders made now for the DK2 are expected to ship in September this year.
