Oculus splits into desktop VR and mobile VR business units

Oculus will bring its VR headset developments into two business units. There will be a PC VR group that focuses on virtual reality for desktops and a mobile VR group for mobile VR applications. The current CEO will start at the PC division.

By splitting into two business units, Oculus wants to focus more on developments and bring future products to market faster. The current CEO of Oculus, Brendan Iribe, is stepping down from his position. He will continue as CEO of the PC-VR division, where he will again focus more on product development.

Oculus’ mobile division will be led by Jon Thomason, who recently joined the company as head of its software division. The company now has to look for a new CEO, because Iribe has resigned from that position. Together with Facebook, the owner of Oculus, the company will look for a new director.

Oculus has so far released the Rift and made the Gear VR in collaboration with Samsung. In October, the company showed a wireless headset equipped with its own hardware. It is not yet known whether the development of that headset, which should be cheaper than the Rift, will be transferred to the desktop department or the business unit that focuses on mobile VR applications.
