Oculus Releases Patch for Recent Rift Software Issues – Update

Oculus has released a patch for issues with the Rift software caused by an expired certificate. This resulted in users seeing an error message when trying to launch the software.

Oculus has made the patch available on its website, where it can be downloaded manually. The company has also put a support page online with installation instructions. The first reactions on Reddit seem to confirm that the patch does indeed fix the problems and that the Rift headset is usable again.

On Wednesday, Oculus confirmed that the issues were caused by an expired DLL certificate, as discovered by a Reddit user. At the time, the company said pushing an update was fraught with problems because the expired certificate “blocks the default path for software updates.”

Users who encountered the problem saw an error message when starting the Rift software informing them that the ‘Oculus Runtime Service’ could not be reached. As a result, the headset was unusable.

Update, 12:42 PM: Oculus has sent an email to users in which the company is offering a refund of $15 in Store credit for people who used the Rift on or after February 1.
