Oculus releases app to watch VR video together

Oculus has released the Social Alpha app that allows users to watch Twitch or Vimeo content ‘together’. All users are placed in a virtual space, where they are represented by avatars that follow their head movements.

Users can choose what avatar they want, including robots, cats, zombies and aliens, Uploadvr reports. When a user speaks to the rest of his group, the avatar gets a circle in front of his mouth to indicate who is talking. When watching a stream in this way, for example, it is not possible to use the chat function of Twitch.

The description of the app states that when using the Social Alpha app, users make public what they are watching. It is not entirely clear where this will be made public. Taking screenshots of the environment that viewers see them does not seem possible. While the Oculus Rift is not yet available, the Social Alpha also works on Samsung Gear VR devices. The app can be found in the Oculus Store.
