Oculus is looking for partners for the release of virtual reality glasses
Oculus, maker of the popular virtual reality glasses Oculus Rift, has indicated that it wants to enter into partnerships in the long term. With this, the company wants to boost sales of virtual reality glasses.
According to Oculus CEO Brendan Iribe, one billion users should eventually use virtual reality, he said in a conversation with Bloomberg. Because Oculus does not expect to be able to sell a billion VR glasses on its own, cooperation with manufacturers is necessary. Currently, the market for virtual reality is still small, but Oculus hopes to change that.
It is not clear exactly what that collaboration will look like, but Iribe told Bloomberg that it wants to use the same strategy as Google with its Android operating system. With this, the CEO is probably referring to the fact that Google makes the software available and hardware manufacturers then use it for their devices.
Earlier there were rumors that Oculus is collaborating with Samsung in making VR glasses. In addition, Oculus would supply the software, while Samsung makes high-resolution OLED panels available, which can be used to make VR glasses. Iribe did not confirm these rumors, but did indicate that discussions have been held with Sony, which is already working on VR glasses under the name Project Morpheus. However, no concrete agreements have yet been made with manufacturers.
Facebook recently acquired Oculus for $1.45 billion. For the time being, the company behind the social networking site has made little changes to its business operations.
