Oculus Go has standard size battery that may be upgradable

The Oculus Go presumably has a standard-sized battery that can therefore be easily upgraded. No one has yet attempted such an upgrade of the battery capacity. It would theoretically give the VR headset a better battery life.

The Oculus Go has a built-in 2600mAh battery and a Palmer Luckey’s photo shows the battery cell. It is a standard battery of the 18650 format and an upgrade should be possible, says Luckey. The standard size seems to open the door for an upgrade to a higher capacity battery cell, which could allow longer battery life for the Oculus Go.

There are online variants of 18650 batteries for sale with a higher capacity of, for example, 3500mAh, although no one has tried that upgrade yet. According to the manufacturer, the Oculus Go has a battery life of about two hours on a charge.

Oculus has released the Go in the Benelux for 219 euros. The headset runs the same apps as Samsung’s Gear VR headset, but doesn’t require a phone to function. The headset contains a Qualcomm Snapdragon 821-soc and an LCD with a refresh rate of 60 or 72Hz. The Oculus Go comes with a controller whose movements are tracked by sensors. Furthermore, the glasses register the head movements of the user, but there is no more freedom of movement in the virtual environment. Walking or bending over is therefore not registered by the Go headset.
