Oculus Founder and Rift Glasses Designer Palmer Luckey Leaves Facebook
Oculus VR co-founder and Rift glasses designer Palmer Luckey has left Facebook. The reason is unknown, but may be related to the fuss about Luckey during the US election.
Facebook, parent company of Oculus, announced Luckey’s departure with a statement saying he will be missed: “Palmer’s legacy extends far beyond Oculus. His resourceful spirit has helped spark the modern VR revolution and build an industry.” to build.”
The company has not released any further details about his departure. However, it can hardly be separated from the controversy surrounding the VR pioneer at the end of last year. In September, The Daily Beast ran an article claiming that Luckey had an affinity for the alt-right movement and invested a lot of money in a right-wing organization that specialized in shitposting and memes to discredit presidential candidate Hillary Clinton.
Luckey admitted to donating $10,000 to the organization, but then things went quiet around the Oculus founder. He also did not appear at the Oculus Connect Conference. Luckey experimented with his own designs for VR glasses in 2009 and a year later the 17-year-old had his first prototype, the PR1, ready. John Carmack of id Software, among others, quickly showed interest and in 2012, Luckey was the driving force behind the creation of Oculus VR. In 2014, Facebook acquired Oculus VR, turning Luckey into a multimillionaire.
