Oculus discontinues Oculus Go and focuses on 6dof headsets like Quest and Rift
Facebook subsidiary Oculus stops selling the Oculus Go headset that was released two years ago. There will also be no new version. The company will focus entirely on headsets such as the Quest and Rift with six-axis tracking.
Oculus will continue to release bug fixes and security updates for the Oculus Go until 2022. Users can also continue to use the headset, but no new features will be released. After December 4, 2020, Oculus will no longer accept new apps for the headset. Existing apps can then no longer be updated.
The Oculus Go was released two years ago and was one of the first standalone VR glasses. The headset has three-axis head tracking, while goggles like the Oculus Quest and Rift offer six-axis head tracking, which opens up more software options. According to Oculus, the success of the Quest and Rift shows that that feature is important for VR and that is why support for the Go headset is ending, where it is missing. At the beginning of this year, Oculus stopped supporting the Samsung Gear VR headset.
Oculus also says that it will be easier for developers to release apps for the Quest from the beginning of next year. There will be a way to run an app on Quest headsets without requiring it to be allowed in the Oculus Store, without using sideloading. How that works exactly is not yet known, Oculus will announce more about it later.
