Oculus adds USB 2.0 cable support to Link software for Quest

Oculus has added support for USB 2.0 cables to the beta of the Oculus Link software to connect a PC to the Oculus Quest released last year. As a result, the supplied charging cable now also works for the connection.

In the stable version, a USB 3.0 cable is still required and Oculus itself sells a suitable cable for $ 80, but every USB 2.0 cable works with the latest beta, UploadVR claims. Oculus Link still warns that a USB 3.0 cable is recommended, but according to the site there is no visible difference in the images. USB 3.0 has a much higher bandwidth due to the addition of an extra cable pair, but the Link software doesn’t seem to take advantage of that.

Former Oculus CEO John Carmack said November last year that he hoped there would be an update that takes advantage of the extra bandwidth of USB 3.1, but nothing has been heard of that update since. Oculus Link is the software to connect the originally standalone VR headset Quest to a PC and thus be able to play games made for the Oculus Rift. The Quest came out last year for 449 euros.
