OBS gains support for AV1 encoding on AMD RX 7000 and Intel Arc GPUs

Open Broadcaster Software adds support for the AV1 encoders in AMD Radeon RX 7000 and Intel Arc GPUs. This allows users to use the codec to record PC images. AV1 support for Nvidia’s RTX 40 series was added at the end of last year.

Support for the AV1 video codec for the latest GPUs from Intel and AMD was added in OBS Studio version 29.0. AV1 is currently only supported in the Windows version of OBS Studio; the Linux version cannot yet handle the codec. AV1 is currently mainly suitable for recording images, as services such as YouTube and Twitch do not yet support the codec.

AV1 image encoding is currently only supported by AMD’s Radeon RX 7000 series based on the RDNA3 architecture, Intel’s Arc Alchemist graphics cards and Nvidia’s GeForce RTX 40 series. The latter already received AV1 support on OBS Studio in November last year. Certain previous GPUs from AMD, Intel and Nvidia already supported decoding AV1 images.

OBS Studio 29.0 also adds support for Intel’s HEVC encoder, also only in the Windows version. The software also gets a number of other new features, including some new audio filters, and several bug fixes.
