Nvidia wants to simplify product naming

Nvidia has come to the conclusion that consumers find the current naming of its video cards too opaque. The company has announced that it will simplify it.

According to Roy Taylor, CEO at Nvidia, the new naming is important to appeal to a wider audience. “There is a need to simplify naming for consumers, there is no doubt about that. We think people who know the Geforce brand understand the current naming convention, but if we want to appeal to a wider audience, we need to find a solution to the complexity Taylor told Gamesindustry.biz. The new name has not yet been announced.

One reason for the simplification plans could be the criticism that Nvidia has got on renaming the Geforce 8800GS to Geforce 9600GSO. Also, the Geforce 9800GTX turned out to be nothing more than a higher clocked 8800GTS. The suffixes found at the end of model names from different Geforce generations are also not comparable and cause confusion when compared to the naming convention of ATI video cards. Nvidia recently renamed all its Forceware drivers to Geforce to avoid confusion with its nForce chipset.
