Nvidia will fix the issues with the GTX 1080 Founders Edition fans in the next driver update. It is not known when it will be released, but at least this will happen soon enough that Nvidia does not consider a hotfix necessary.

Manuel Guzman of Nvidia’s quality control department makes the news public on the company’s forum. So far, the fix has successfully passed the company’s internal testing process and Guzman has stated that the next driver will receive it. Users who are considering returning their cards due to the issue may therefore no longer need to do so. Nvidia is not disclosing details about the nature of the problem. Also the release date of the driver is not mentioned; Guzman simply says ‘soon’.

In the past week, complaints surfaced that the GTX 1080 Founders Edition’s fan would spin at very high speeds at random times in games. The fan makes a lot of noise. The constant increase and decrease in fan speed was independent of the card’s temperature and was described as an annoying, loud noise reminiscent of “an undulating ocean,” according to one user. Setting a custom fan profile doesn’t help.
