Nvidia sells more GPUs and makes more money in the gaming market
Nvidia says the good sales of Maxwell GPUs are boosting its sales. GeForce GPU sales are up 38 percent from last year. This is also due to the growing gaming market. Revenue from Tegra chips for smartphones and tablets fell.
The increase in sales is due to individual cards and laptops; the turnkey desktop market declined, according to the chip company. According to the CEO of Nvidia, the GPU market for laptops is growing by 100 percent per year. Nvidia also reported that there are now more than 50 million users of the GeForce Experience application, which allows gamers to optimize their PC settings.
In the fourth quarter of 2014, sales of Tegra chips decreased by 15 percent, while sales of those chips for the automotive industry and Shield devices did increase. However, that growth was not enough to offset the decline in smartphone and tablet sales, Nvidia said.
The total turnover of the GPU branch, which also includes the Tesla and Quadro models, increased by 13 percent in the fourth quarter, but it was mainly the sales of the GeForce video chips that caused sales growth. Turnover from this grew by 38 percent compared to a year earlier.
Ultimately, the company’s quarterly revenue and profit amounted to 4.68 billion and 631 million dollars, respectively, or 4.13 billion and 557 million euros. That was successively 13 and 43 percent higher than in 2013.
