Nvidia releases driver to support FreeSync monitors
Nvidia has released driver version 417.71 for its GeForce video cards. With this update, the company adds support for monitors with the so-called G-Sync Compatible label. G-Sync can be used with these FreeSync screens, among others.
Nvidia reports that driver 417.71 adds support for the relatively new GeForce RTX 2060 in addition to support for G-Sync Compatible monitors. Nvidia has certified twelve monitors with the designation ‘G-Sync Compatible’, although VESA’s Adaptive-Sync can also be used on FreeSync monitors that are not certified. Adaptive-Sync is called FreeSync at AMD; it’s the same technique.
The company behind the GeForce graphics cards announced at CES that it would support Adaptive-Sync. The twelve certified monitors are all game monitors with tn panels and a large FreeSync range. Support for monitors that Nvidia says are good enough to be certified will work on GeForce 10- and 20-series graphics cards.
