Nvidia records record sales thanks to GeForce GPU sales

Nvidia posted record sales in the past quarter. This is largely due to the sale of graphics cards for gamers. Compared to the third quarter last year, sales from GeForce GPUs increased by 44 percent.

Nvidia closed the third quarter of its fiscal year 2016 with a record turnover of more than 1.3 billion dollars, or almost 1.2 billion euros. Profits came in at $246 million. The company got the majority of its revenue from the sale of GPUs; in total that is 1.1 billion dollars. Nvidia’s sales of graphics cards for gamers earned Nvidia $761 million in revenue. That is 44 percent more than the third quarter last year.

During the presentation of the figures, Nvidia also announced that revenues from the auto industry have increased by 51 percent. With $79 million, Nvidia currently gets a relatively small part of the turnover from this branch, but there are many car manufacturers that use Nvidia technology for their digital cockpits. At the Frankfurt Auto Show, Mercedes Benz, Audi, Porsche, Bentley and Honda showcased models with Nvidia hardware on board. Tesla also uses an infotainment system in its new Model X that is powered by chips from Nvidia. The manufacturer also says that it is working with fifty companies on Drive PX. This autonomous car platform was presented in May and uses two Tegra X1 socs.

With its Tegra-socs, Nvidia is unable to achieve growing figures when it comes to sales to OEMs for use in, for example, tablets and laptops. Google uses the X1 soc in the Pixel C, and Acer and HP also use K1 socs in their Chromebooks. At $192 million, sales in this segment are 82 percent lower than in the same quarter a year ago.
