Nvidia opens robotics lab in Seattle
Nvidia has officially opened its new robotics research lab in Seattle. In the research center, the company wants to develop robots that can perform tasks in collaboration with people, including at home.
The new robotics lab will be called the AI Robotics Research Lab, and it will be led by Dieter Fox, who also works as a professor at the University of Washington. With the collaboration, Nvidia is trying to benefit from students who want to work for the AI lab. Although the official opening is now taking place, researchers have been setting up the lab since November, and about 50 researchers are expected to be working by the middle of this year.
One of the programs Nvidia is focusing on is developing a robot that can help in the kitchen. The intention is that the robot can be used for everyday tasks and can support the residents of the house. Nvidia calls this collaboration with humans “interactive manipulation.” According to Nvidia, the kitchen is an excellent test location, because it is a relatively structured environment, where it is easy to introduce new variables in order to create complex interactions.
Earlier this year, Nvidia opened an artificial intelligence research center in Toronto. This is done in collaboration with the University of Toronto.
