‘Nvidia is close to takeover Arm for more than $ 40 billion’
Nvidia is rumored to be close to a takeover of Arm. Owner Softbank would like to sell the chip manufacturer for more than $ 40 billion. Any deal will still have to be approved by the authorities.
The generally well-informed The Wall Street Journal reports this, based on sources familiar with the case. Nvidia would have put on the table an amount that is described as “low in the $ 40 billion”; an exact amount was not mentioned. The deal could possibly be announced early next week. None of the parties involved responded to the report.
This summer, the first rumors emerged that Softbank was planning to sell Arm, something that was later confirmed. There were also voices that Nvidia would have plans, after which rumors recently emerged about ‘advanced talks’. At the time, it involved an amount of ‘more than 27 billion euros’, the amount that owner Softbank paid for Arm. If The Wall Street Journal’s coverage is accurate, Nvidia has made another significantly higher offer.
Should an agreement be reached between Softbank and Nvidia, it is not yet certain whether the acquisition will ultimately go ahead. Nvidia and Arm are active in the same industry and Nvidia is currently Arm customer. Many companies currently rely on the licenses they purchase from Arm to make chips, and the acquisition would make Nvidia one of the largest chip companies worldwide. Therefore, authorities are likely to look into the anti-competitive effect of the deal.
