Nvidia Announces GeForce GTX 1050 and 1050 Ti
Nvidia has announced two new video cards; the GTX 1050 and 1050 Ti. Both video cards would consume a maximum of 75 watts, eliminating the need for a power supply with a six-pin plug. The suggested retail price is 125 euros for the 1050 and 155 euros for the 1050 Ti.
For the GeForce GTX 1050 and 1050 Ti, Nvidia has developed a new Pascal GPU, codenamed GP 107. The gpu has 768 cores, which are all used by the 1050 Ti, while a sm unit with 128 cores is disabled with the regular 1050. The GTX 1050 Ti has 4GB GDDR5 memory, while the regular 1050 has to make do with 2GB.
The GTX 1050 gets a slightly higher clock speed than the 1050 Ti, although the clock speed in practice will mainly depend on the dynamic overclocking that the GPU boost 3.0 functionality takes into account. According to Nvidia, the GPU can run at more than 2GHz by overclocking.
The new video cards are aimed at people who want to upgrade from an older video card or igp, which is made easy because the video card does not require an external power supply. Still, there would still be quite a bit of graphical power on board; on medium settings, according to Nvidia, GTA 5 would run at 62 fps, at a resolution of 1920×1080 pixels.
How the new GTX 1050 cards perform in other games and how the video cards compare to the competition will become clear from October 25th. Then the reviews appear and the tickets go on sale. A number of manufacturers have already published photos of the new cards, but no further information on clock speeds and specific prices has been released yet. There is a suggested retail price from Nvidia; the GTX 1050 should cost 125 euros, while the 1050 Ti will be priced at 155 euros. This means that the suggested retail price of the 1050 Ti is twenty-five euros below that of the GTX 950.
Update, 15:29: In the meantime, Nvidia has announced European prices and the dollar prices in the article have therefore been replaced by euros.
