Nvidia and Intel also participate in exascale US project

Following AMD’s lead, Nvidia and Intel have also won an exascale order from the US government. For their contribution to exascale computing, the companies will receive $12.4 and 19 million respectively.

Nvidia announced on its blog that the US Department of Energy is investing $12.4 million in developing technology to achieve exascale computing power. A two-year contract has been signed for the amount, under which Nvidia will collaborate with scientists who are employed by the American government.

According to HPCwire, Intel has also won such a contract, with the US government investing an amount of $ 19 million. Whamcloud would also participate in the study; this company focuses specifically on storage and I/O technology for the project, for which it received an undisclosed amount. Incidentally, it also came out that Whamcloud is being acquired by Intel for an as yet undisclosed amount.

Since AMD had already been awarded $12.6 million, the US Department of Energy appears to have serious plans to develop supercomputers with exascale-level computing power. The term “exascale computing” refers to the computing power of future supercomputers at the exaflops level. Currently, supercomputers are at the level of petaflops, with the most powerful computer reaching 16.32 petaflops; this concerns the Sequoia from IBM.
