The number of paying Spotify users rose to 188 million in the past quarter. In total, the platform now has 433 million active users, Spotify says when presenting its quarterly figures.

According to Spotify the number of paying Premium users is fourteen percent higher than a year ago. Then the company recorded 165 million subscribers. The streaming service says this growth is higher than previously expected. The increase was assisted by promotions and Premium Family subscriptions, the company writes.

The number of monthly active Spotify users also increased by 19 percent to 433 million last quarter. According to the streaming service, this growth in the number of active users also exceeds previous predictions. Spotify says that’s the biggest increase the company has seen in a second quarter to date. The company says that the increase in users is partly due to marketing campaigns.

At the same time, the company posted an operating loss of 194 million euros last quarter. According to the streaming service, this is partly due to an increase in personnel costs; the company has expanded its advertising team and also made a number of acquisitions. The company also increased its advertising spending to drive its aforementioned growth in emerging markets and youth.
