Number of Sinterklaas purchases via the internet has increased by a third

Thirty percent more Sinterklaas purchases were made via the internet this year than last year, according to research carried out on behalf of Thuiswinkel.org. This resulted in 42 percent extra turnover at online retailers. Tablets and the Galaxy S III were popular, among others.

According to Despite the recession, Thuiswinkel.org has seen an increase in the number of Sinterklaas purchases via the internet. An increase of a third in online Sinterklaas purchases compared to last year resulted in 42 percent extra turnover for internet retailers, according to research carried out on behalf of the trade association.

Sinterklaas would provide 38 million extra online turnover per week; in a normal week 90 million euros is raised, but in the Sinterklaas season that is 128 million euros. In total, between 1 November and 5 December, an additional 188 million euros will be converted thanks to Sinterklaas. The growth also resulted in an increase in the number of parcels sent: a growth of 41 percent compared to the Sinterklaas period last year.

The most popular Sinterklaas gifts ordered via the internet were the iPad and Android tablets, although it is not clear which tablet was the most popular. The Galaxy S III was also popular, as was FIFA 13 for the PlayStation 3.
