Number of Epic Games Store accounts increases, number of active accounts remains stable

The number of Epic Games Store users has increased by 34 million in a year, according to Epic. Now the store has more than 194 million PC users, of which 31.1 million are active daily. The number of daily active users is therefore about the same as a year earlier.

Where Epic wrote last year that the number of daily active users had increased by 192 percent to 31.3 million, the company now says it has 31.1 million daily active users. The peak number of concurrent users has also remained stable, with 13.2 million in 2021 compared to 13 million last year. Last December was clearly busier than the year before; then there were 62 million active users, which is 11 percent more than in December 2020. However, December 2020 was quieter than December 2019 when there were 61 million active users.

Although the number of daily active users remained stable, more was spent in the store. Last year, the Store spent $840 million, of which $300 million was spent on third-party games. This is respectively 20 and 12 percent more than a year earlier. More than half a billion was therefore spent on Epic games, which presumably concerns Fortnite. Epic also says it has nearly doubled the number of games offered in the Store to 917 titles. Of these, 89 were given away for free; in total, players claimed 765 million free games. The company says it will continue to give away games for free next year.

Epic also briefly touches on some of the features that came to the Store last year and are yet to arrive this year. For example, the company says that 25 games now have support for achievements. Furthermore, it aims to add profiles to the platform this year, something it had previously promised for 2021. Epic also wants to allow users to choose which games to download first, users should be able to see their library outside the launcher and there should be more filters for the library. In addition, the launcher must become faster and there must be a Game Hub where updates and news about certain games appear.
