Number of active users of Mastodon continues to drop

The number of active users of decentralized social medium Mastodon fell again last month. After a peak at the end of November, the number of active users had already fallen, there are now 1.4 million active users on the platform.

This means that the number of active users is still about four times higher than before the big peak last fall, according to figures which are under Network Health on JoinMastodon.org and where, among other things Wired pays attention. This means that part of the influx of users seems to remain, although a part also seems to have left the platform.

Presumably a lot of people tried Mastodon in the first few weeks after Elon Musk became CEO following the takeover of Twitter. Mastodon was considered an alternative to Twitter at the time, because it works with posts just like that commercial network. The structure of Mastodon is different, with thousands of different servers worldwide. The number of servers is still growing and is now around 9800. It works with ActivityPub, an open source framework for social media.
