Nothing has taken over the Essential brand name
Nothing, the new company of OnePlus co-founder Carl Pei, has acquired the Essential brand name. Essential was the company of Android founder Andy Rubin, which released one smartphone in 2017. Last year Essential stopped.
The Essential brand name and logo are owned by Nothing, according to registrations with the British Intellectual Property Office. Website 9to5google noted that Andy Rubin has transferred ownership of this to Carl Pei. The transaction was completed in January.
It is not known what the plans are for Nothing with the brand name Essential. It is also not clear whether Nothing has acquired more than the brand name and logos from Essential. It could also concern patents, for example.
Carl Pei announced earlier this year that he founded the new company with the aim of releasing smart devices. In February, he said that wireless earbuds from Nothing will be released in the summer and more devices later this year.
Essential was known for the PH-1 smartphone. Founded by Android founder Andy Rubin, the brand had ambitions to create a second phone and smarthome hub as well, but that never happened. Essential stopped at the beginning of last year.
