‘Notebook makers are behind standard for flat batteries’

Acer, Asus and notebook battery makers have reportedly supported a standard for prismatic or rectangular cell batteries. Intel is a big proponent of such a standard for ultrabooks in particular.

In practice, the manufacturers of these products set the standard for laptop batteries. The large makers Panasonic, Samsung SDI and LG are said to have rallied behind flat batteries with prismatic cells. The prismatic lithium-ion batteries or libs that the manufacturers will produce in the second half of 2012 have dimensions of 60 by 80 mm and a thickness of 5 to 8 mm.

Unlike the different types of flat batteries that ultrabook makers now use for their thin laptops, the upcoming standardized variants are interchangeable, claims Digitimes. The site also claims that the prismatic lithium-ion batteries are 25 to 30 percent cheaper than traditional variants of the same capacity and are also 5 percent lighter.

In 2013, the new batteries should make their way into ultrabooks and Taiwanese companies expect it to become the third-largest standard for notebook batteries by then. Acer and Asus would have already decided to use the batteries for upcoming ultrabooks.
