Nostalrius asks successor Elysium to stop with classic WoW server
The Nostalrius team has asked its successor Elysium to stop using its files to run a classic WoW server. Nostalrius had handed it over before, after it itself shut down its server.
In a message, a member of the Nostalrius team writes that it was always the intention to provide a home to players who prefer the ‘vanilla’ version of World of Warcraft. In addition, Nostalrius would have always strived to achieve an official Blizzard server. That has not succeeded so far. The decision to ask Elysium to stop was made because so far only ten percent of Nostalrius players have moved to the new server and this server is now known as a ‘pirate’ rather than fan server.
As a result, Nostalrius believes he has failed in his mission and says that the transfer to Elysium has made it more difficult to achieve his goals. That is why the Elysium asks to stop using the data transferred in November. Elysium says in a response it will comply with the request. In addition, it says it is setting up its own Anathema server, which should be “the same or better” than Nostalrius.
After all data has been transferred since the start of Elysium, all Nostalrius data will be erased. Elysium states that it has “taken up the torch from Nostalrius and has no intention of extinguishing it” and is coming up with its own numbers on the popularity of its servers. It writes that 52 percent of all Nostalrius accounts were transferred in 16 days. In addition, 17,000 players would have been online when the server opened. Divided over four realms, that’s 30,500 players.
Nostalrius ran an early version of World of Warcraft for a long time, until the server was taken offline by Blizzard last year. It then passed the source code of its server software to Elysium, which opened its own variant on December 17. The server is popular with players who want to play the classic version of WoW. Blizzard itself does not provide an opportunity to play the game that way and indicated during its last BlizzCon event that there was nothing new to report on the subject. A petition to introduce classic WoW servers garnered nearly 280,000 votes last year.
