Nokia wants to charge mobile phones wirelessly
Nokia wants users of its mobile phones to be able to charge them wirelessly in the future via Qi, the new standard of the Wireless Power Consortium. Nokia has therefore joined the consortium, of which competitor Samsung is already a member.
Qi is a new standard that is being developed to charge various types of electronics via induction. The Wireless Power Consortium, which is developing the standard, is now almost ready and the specification has reached version 0.95. Companies such as Duracell, Philips and Samsung were already members of the consortium, now there is Nokia recovered.
If both Nokia and Samsung start to build in Qi in new mobile phones, the new standard could soon be on a large majority of devices: Nokia has a market share of about 38 percent, with Samsung around 20 percent. Earlier this year, Palm introduced an accessory to charge the battery of its new smartphone Pre by means of induction.
