Nokia makes the first telephone call with 3D audio that will be included in the 5G standard
Nokia has made the first telephone call with 3D audio, which the company calls Immersive Voice. This happened via a publicly accessible 5G network, because the technology must become part of 5G in the coming years.
In 5G it's called Immersive Voice Audio Services, or IVAS, and it should come in 5G-Advanced, says Nokia. It is the first time that the company has set up a telephone call with 3D audio on a public 5G network. The CEO of Nokia had that first conversation.
IVAS should, among other things, make it possible to place voices in group conversations in space. It is also possible to track the head, so that audio always appears to come from a fixed place in the room. It is unknown whether and how providers will support IVAS in 5G-Advanced. If they do that, it will probably only be after a few years.
