Nokia and Samsung extend patent deal
Nokia announces that it has concluded a new agreement with Samsung on the use of each other’s patents. The deal is an extension of a previous agreement struck in February following a lawsuit between the two companies.
The agreement stipulates that the companies can use each other’s patented techniques. It is not clear which patents are involved, but Nokia says the deal strengthens its “leadership in the technology of the programmable world”. After divesting the mobile business, Nokia is mainly active in the network infrastructure market.
Nokia expects the new deal to yield a financial benefit. At the end of the year, the company expects to be able to add about 950 million euros in revenues related to the licensing of patents and trademarks. It is unclear what part of this amount is related to the new deal with Samsung.
Nokia says the deal is an extension of the deal signed in February. That agreement was the result of a lawsuit from Nokia against Samsung over the use of patents. The arbitration agreement made sure that Samsung pays Nokia for the use of patented techniques.
