Nissan and Renault are considering making EVs with 800V batteries together

Car manufacturers Renault and Nissan are considering making cars with 800V batteries together. Battery systems with such voltages can charge faster than cars with a lower voltage. Audi, Hyundai, Kia and Maserati, among others, have cars with 800V batteries.

For cars after 2026 Renault and Nissan would like to investigate whether they can develop a joint car platform with an 800V battery system. With this, the manufacturers would like to enable faster loading times. It may then be a platform for C-segment cars, so cars the size of, for example, Renault’s Mégane or Nissan’s Qashqai. According to the Portuguese medium Observador Renault is working with Valeo on an 800V battery system that could be used in a car by 2027.

Cars with 800V battery systems can achieve higher peak charging speeds without the need for a higher current, provided the charging station also supports this. A car with an 800V charging system could also provide more power to the engines, although this is probably not the main goal of Nissan or Renault. The two car manufacturers also announce that they want to investigate whether they can set up a joint European charging network at dealers of the two brands.
