Nintendo: There will be no new model of the Switch in 2020
There will be no new model of the Switch in 2020. That’s what Nintendo says. The console maker instead wants to focus on expanding the number of people using a Switch model. The Switch came out in 2017, the Switch Lite last year.
Nintendo believes it is important to “continue to communicate the appeal of both models,” CEO Shuntaro Furukawa said in a presentation to investors following Thursday’s quarterly results. “Please note that we have no plans to introduce a new model of the Switch.”
However, there may be variants of the current models with different themes. For example, an Animal Crossing-themed Switch will be released in March along with the New Horizons game. Additionally, Nintendo wants developers to continue to focus on a single hardware platform, as the Switch will support both handheld and console gaming.
The Verge notes that Nintendo will probably need new processors for a new Switch. The maker of the processor for the Switch, Nvidia, has stopped developing more powerful processors for this kind of purpose.
The presentation also showed that Nintendo shipped 4.32 million Switch consoles in Europe between April and December last year. That’s 15 percent more than in the same period in 2018. Of the Ring Fit, an accessory for the Switch that came out last year, Nintendo has shipped 1.7 million worldwide.
