Unlike predecessors Wii U, 3DS and Wii, the Nintendo Switch will not get a Virtual Console. That says the Japanese console manufacturer. Old games will be released for the new console, but not in a separate download store.

There are currently no plans to launch an old game download store called Virtual Console, Nintendo told Kotaku. That download store appeared for the Wii in 2006, while it later became available for the 3DS in 2011 and the Wii U in 2013. The download store allows users to purchase a limited selection of games for previous consoles.

Switch users can play classic games with a subscription to the online service. There will be twenty at the time of Nintendo Switch Online release, of which Nintendo has announced ten: Donkey Kong, Ice Climber, The Legend of Zelda, Mario Bros., Soccer, Super Mario Bros. and tennis. Earlier, Nintendo said that Balloon Fight, Dr. Mario and Super Mario Bros. 3 belong to the selection. In addition, those old games allow users to start playing online and chatting via voice, something that was impossible in the original games.
