Nintendo Switch supports GameCube controllers

Nintendo has added support for GameCube controllers in the latest update to its Switch console. The company has not disclosed this itself, but that is apparent from user experiences. The Wii U adapter is required to use the controllers.

That GameCube controllers can be used in combination with the Switch was discovered by Twitter user Master Mewking. GameXplain then put a video on YouTube demonstrating how it works. Connecting the controllers requires an adapter that Nintendo released together with Super Smash Bros. for the Wii U. Up to four controllers can be connected to that adapter.

The Nintendo Switch will then recognize the controllers connected to the adapter as USB controllers and they will work in all games. Users should note that the buttons on the old GameCube controllers do not match those on the new Switch controllers. As a result, certain functions in games may not work due to lack of the necessary button.

Last week it also appeared that the Nintendo Switch now supports wireless USB headsets. That functionality has also been added in firmware version 4.0, without Nintendo having publicized it.
