Nintendo Switch has been delivered over 100 million times and passes Nintendo Wii
Nintendo has shipped 103.54 million Switch consoles to date. With that, the Switch has surpassed the Nintendo Wii as one of Nintendo’s most successful consoles. Only the Nintendo DS and Game Boy handhelds have shipped more copies.
In the past quarter, Nintendo shipped 10.67 million Switch consoles, of which 5.39 million ‘regular’ units and 1.34 million Lite models. Launched in October, the Nintendo Switch OLED shipped 3.94 million units last quarter. In the same quarter in 2020, Nintendo shipped a total of 11.56 million Switch consoles. So this year there were fewer, presumably because of ongoing chip shortages and supply chain problems.
Nintendo delivered more software in the previous quarter than a year earlier. In the past period, the company has sold 85.41 million copies of software, the company reports. That is an increase of 12.6 percent compared to the same period in 2020. 59.8 percent related to physical games. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe and Animal Crossing: New Horizons, among others, did well. Those games have been delivered 43.35 million and 37.62 million respectively to date.
In terms of new games, the Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl remakes have been delivered 13.97 million times. For Mario Party Super Stars it’s 5.43 million times, The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword HD 3.85 million times and for Metroid Dread that number was 2.74 million. Pokémon Legends: Arceus is not counted yet. That game was released on January 28, 2022, while the past quarter ran through December 2021.
In the period from April to December, the last three quarters of the financial year, turnover amounted to 1320 billion yen, or about 10.2 billion euros. That is 6 percent less than a year earlier. Net profit was 367.3 billion yen, 2.5 percent less than a year earlier. Converted, the profit is about 2.8 billion euros.
For 2022, Nintendo has slightly lowered its supply expectations for the Switch, from 24 to 23 million consoles. The manufacturer expects to sell more games and therefore turnover and net profit should increase this year. Splatoon 3, Bayonetta 3 and the sequel to The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild are planned for 2022, although those titles have no concrete release date yet.
