Nintendo sold 2.13 million Switch consoles in the second quarter
Nintendo sold 2.13 million Switch consoles in the past quarter, it announced in the quarterly figures. The recently released Super Mario Maker 2 has made a good start, according to the Japanese game maker with 2.42 million copies sold.
2.13 million Switch consoles sold represent an increase of 13.2 percent from the second quarter of last year, Nintendo reports. In total, 22.62 million physical Switch games have been sold, which is an increase of 25.9 percent compared to a year ago. Nintendo lists online sales separately. These have increased by 65.3 percent, but it does not mention an absolute number. The company does state that it has earned about 250 million euros from these downloadables.
Nintendo has also been active in the smartphone games market since late 2015. There is an increase of ten percent in turnover, good for approximately 83 million euros. Nintendo’s current smartphone offerings include Super Mario Run, Dr. Mario World, Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp, Dragalia Lost and Fire Emblem Heroes. Various Pokémon games are added via licenses.
The final total turnover amounts to 1.42 billion euros and the profit comes down to 226 million euros. Nintendo expects to further increase the installed base of its console in September with the upcoming Nintendo Switch Lite, a smaller, cheaper variant without a dock function.
