Nintendo is working on a game console without optical discs
Nintendo has filed a patent for a game system that works with a hard drive and no longer uses optical discs. The system appears to be fetching games from over a network connection and then saving them locally.
This can be deduced from data that has appeared on the NeoGAF forum, a website for game enthusiasts where patents are more frequently applied for. Nintendo filed for the patent in the United States in February, but it wasn’t announced publicly until this week.
The game system appears to be downloading the games over a network connection. In addition, the device that Nintendo describes has the ability to read and write content from memory cards. It is not known what type it is, but it may be SD cards.
In addition to the game system that seems to work without optical discs, Nintendo may also be developing a new type of controller. The controller has a screen and a technique that is formally called Speed Control Processing. It would calculate the speed at which a game can be played.
