Nintendo is experimenting with bendable Joy-Con joysticks for the Switch

Nintendo may want to release a bendable variant of the Joy-Con joysticks for the Nintendo Switch in the future. This is apparent from a patent application that the Japanese company has filed with the American patent office Uspto.

Sketches accompanying the patent application filed by Nintendo with the United States Patent and Trademark Office, and noted by LetsGoDigital, show a Joy-Con controller whose top portion can be bent. The tweak appears to be primarily aimed at improving the Joy-Con’s ergonomics and ease of use, whether attached to the Switch or used detached.

Nintendo is considering various solutions for the necessary bending mechanism, according to the patent application. For example, there is a sketch of a Joy-Con with a rather classic hinge mechanism with a ‘kink’, and a drawing of a more flexible joystick that actually bends.

As with any patent application, it is uncertain whether Nintendo will ever put the custom Joy-Con controllers into production. On the other hand, it is possible that the bendable design will become part of the Nintendo Switch Pro, which has been rumored for months, or another future revision of the game console.
