Nintendo is blocking the upcoming release of the Dolphin emulator on Steam. Initially, the emulator for Nintendo Wii and GameCube games would become available on Steam in the second quarter of 2023. The release has now been postponed ‘indefinitely’.

In legal notice addressed to Steam parent company Valve, seen by PCGamer, Nintendo says the Dolphin emulator violates the game manufacturer’s intellectual property rights and should therefore be removed from the Steam store. Nintendo hereby invokes its rights under the Digital Millennium Copyright Act, or DMCA. Valve has the Dolphin’s Steam page removed from the platform.

Dolphin reports on his blog that the release on Steam has now been postponed ‘indefinitely’. “We are currently exploring our options and will provide a more in-depth response in the near future.” The release of the Dolphin emulator on Steam would make it possible to play older Nintendo games from the Wii and GameCube era in higher resolution on PC and the Steam Deck. To do this, users must have legal copies of these classic Nintendo games.
